On Sunday, January 6, just a few steps from your new dream home at Knightdale Station, there will be a “birthday” celebration, commemorating the third year of operation for our neighbors at the Oak City Knightdale Brewery.
On their official website at oakcitybrewingcompany.com, it is recalled that the Oak City Knightdale Brewery originally opened its doors for business on January 2, 2016. Giving a brief background and history, the site tells that, “Long time friends, Blake Cone and Matt Keeler, have had many a beer together as they day dreamed about one day opening a small brewery of their own. Then about three years ago they started taking a deeper dive and working on their business plan, reserved the Oak City Brewing Company name, URL and have never turned back.”
The “trip down memory lane” for the Oak City Knightdale Brewery continues, explaining, “After walking miles looking at dozens of possible locations, reworking budgets for the umpteenth time and brewing beer in their garages they finally found a suitable location in beautiful downtown Knightdale.” The memoir concludes, noting, “In spring of 2015, they took the entrepreneurial plunge, quitting their jobs (both with newborns on the way) and started realizing their dream. ”
The celebration of three years and counting of great times at the Oak City Knightdale Brewery will begin on January 6 at noon and run through 8:00 pm. Scheduled on hand are several food trucks, live music, and of course a lot of fun and some great beverages. In addition, the first 200 customers on hand on Sunday, January 6 will receive a free anniversary glass like the one pictured above. This past Monday, December 3, the Wake County Board of Commissioners (WCBOC) met and approved the awarding of over $550,000 in construction contracts, as well as giving their approval on all project funding in what will certainly help the children in the area to “stay cool” all summer long, as construction will begin next month with a tentative opening date of Spring 2019 on an all- new Knightdale Splash Park to be located at Knightdale Station Park.
The plan for the Knightdale Splash Park (rendering pictured above) has been in the works since the initial plans were drawn up for the Knightdale Station community in 2016, as evidenced by the “Project Location Map” which was shown at Monday’s meeting, detailing all of the projects that have been completed and those that were planned to be implemented at some point when the town’s “first master planned community” was still just in its planning stages.
The wheels on the Knightdale Splash Pad were then set into motion first at the July 17, 2017 WCBOC meeting when the “Housing and Community Revitalization Action Plan” was approved. This plan saw the allocation of $330,000 through a Community Development Block Grant go toward the project, with the Town of Knightdale being responsible for matching some of these funds, which they did, appropriating $245,000 to go toward the Knightdale Splash Park, which according to the “Item Summary” attached to the official minutes of the 12/3/18 WCBOD meeting explains, “will provide recreation and cooling relief from the summer heat for…children in the immediate neighborhoods as well as the greater community.”
A slight hitch in the process occurred when the Knightdale Splash Pad project was put out for bidding, and once received on October 10, 2018, it was discovered that all the bids received came in significantly higher than the projected $575,000 budget. Not to be deferred and keeping the kids across the community in mind, the design of the Knightdale Splash Park was slightly altered and there was a re-bid that included a cost request for the design and separate pricing for anything that may be considered an “add-on” to the project.
So, with the bids coming in at considerably lower than the first time around (and eventually awarded to Jackson Builders of Goldsboro), the ball was left in the court of the town of Knightdale, who would be responsible, as written in the initial plan for the Knightdale Splash Park, for any funding above the original allotted amount needed for construction. Stepping up to the plate to “keep the kids cool” in the blistering summer heat, the town approved the extra funding necessary at their own November 5, 2018 meeting and the WCBOC voted at this past Monday’s meeting to accept said funds and move forward with their awarding of $553,132.41 for the construction of the Knightdale Splash Pad, which will begin in January 2019 so that once Spring rolls around and the temperature begins to rise, the new addition…at the Station, will be ready to help the youngsters “beat the heat.”

Already known for its beautiful parks and scenery as well as its countless outdoor living and active lifestyle options, local students joined Mayor Roberson in planting a new tree at Knightdale Station Park as part of the celebration naming Knightdale NC as a Tree City USA Community for the 15th time.
The celebration honoring Knightdale as a Tree City USA was held fittingly enough in accordance with Arbor Day on April 15 at Knightdale Station Park. The Town of Knightdale Tree Board in association with both the Development Services and Parks and Recreation Departments hosted the ceremony, which began with a proclamation being read by the Town Council. Following this, several local children assisted in the planting of a young “hornbeam” tree not only to commemorate the day, but also to demonstrate the town’s commitment to urban tree growth. (Picture shown above courtesy of the Town of Knightdale)
Speaking to being honored for the 15th time as a Tree City USA Community, Knightdale Mayor, James Roberson said, “To receive this designation requires both short-term and long-term planning,” said Knightdale Mayor James Roberson. “To receive it 15 times shows that the Town certainly values its trees. They are part of a broad plan to make our growing community as appealing and beautiful as it can be.”
The Tree City USA program recognizes communities each year that make the maintenance of urban tree canopies a top priority. Sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National State of Foresters, gives the annual Tree City USA recognition based upon current and upcoming tree projects, such as the planed improvements coming soon to the greenway trail along Lynwood Road. This will see several of the damaged tree in this hevily traveled area replaced in addition to more than 20 new plantings that will be added to improve toe overall appearance of this area.
“Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers and committed citizens in communities like Knightdale make smart investments in urban forests,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits.”
